About the Steese Volunteer Fire Department

We cover a fire service area of 32 sq. miles and an Emergency Service Area of 2200 sq. miles in Fairbanks, Alaska. Our newest station is located on Farmers Loop Road and was provided thanks to a grant by the state, allowing us to better serve our areas and manage our average of over 500 yearly emergency response calls. We are in constant need of volunteers and believe in training and empowering community members to serve in emergency situations. Please consider becoming a part of our well-trained response team.

EMS Response District

  • Chena Hot Springs Road –CHSR Resort
  • Steese Hwy –88 Mile Steese Hwy (Borough Boundary)
  • Elliott Hwy –33 Mile Elliott Hwy (Borough Boundary)

Chain of Command

Shift Assignments

Each new volunteer responder is assigned to a shift (A,B,C).

• Shift Captain :

Paid position that rotates on a 3-shift system.  Shift supervisor, may be utilized as Duty Officer.

• Duty Officer (Battalion 6)
Officer-In-Charge (OIC) for emergency responses.  Position may be filled by Chief Officer, Captain, or qualified firefighters authorized by the Fire Chief.

• Duty Chief
On-call chief officer.
